The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University chapter, has suspended its ongoing industrial action with immediate effect.
The decision was reached during a Congress held on Monday, May 11, 2026, following what the unions described as significant progress in negotiations with the Federal Government.
The leadership of both unions praised members for their commitment, solidarity and discipline throughout the strike, which began on May 1, 2026.
They described the action as one of the most successful industrial actions witnessed in the university system in recent years.
According to a communiqué signed by the SSANU Secretary, Comrade Tevin Anyali, the total shutdown of critical activities during the strike sent strong signals across the country.
The Congress noted that negotiations had recorded major progress, including the Federal Government’s formal withdrawal of the controversial letter on the 30 percent consolidated salary increase, which had earlier been rejected by the unions.
Following the developments, the Joint Action Committee resolved to suspend the strike and allow the Federal Government a two-week window to conclude discussions and sign a Memorandum of Action.
Members have been directed to resume work immediately, while the unions urged them to remain vigilant during the suspension period.
The leadership also warned that failure by the Federal Government to fulfill its commitments would lead to an indefinite and more intense industrial action.
The Congress further encouraged members to continue improving themselves and contributing meaningfully to the growth and development of the university system.
