The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) in conjunction with Anambra State Dog Breeders has taken a significant step towards delivering quality dog health care staging the first ever “Dog Show” featuring free anti-rabies vaccination.

The event held in Onitsha, themed “Dog, Man’s Best Friend”  brought together dog owners, veterinarians, dog breeders, dealers on products from across the state and beyond.

Declaring the Show Open, Director, Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture, Awka, Dr Mrs Rose Basil Ejidike, emphasized the importance of vaccination, describing rabies as a fatal but preventable zoonotic disease.

“By vaccinating our dogs, we are not only protecting them, but also safeguarding our families, our communities, our public health.

“The free anti rabies vaccination campaign taking place today underscores this responsibility”

While urging participants to propagate that all dogs should be vaccinated against the disease in their localities, Ejidike noted that preventive steps at combating rabies should be promoted at all times.

Responsible ownership

She further advocated for responsible ownership anchored on proper feeding, regular veterinary care, vaccination, safe housing, identification and appropriate training of dogs.

“This means ensuring that our dogs do not pose a risk to public health, safety or community well being.

“We are not only promoting animal welfare but also strengthening the awareness of One Health, which is understanding that human health, animal health and environmental health are deeply connected”

Chairman, Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Anambra State Chapter, Dr Victor Ughaerumba, said the association was proud to work with partners and sponsors to drive the initiative.

According to him, the show was organised by the association as part of activities lined up for the celebration of World Veterinary Day 2026 in the state.
