Ghana’s President, John Mahama, has emphasised the importance of Nigeria’s stability to Ghana’s security interests, citing the strong ties between both countries.
Mahama made the remarks while speaking at the African Heritage Awards 2026, where he noted that Nigeria’s large population and regional influence mean that any instability could have far-reaching consequences across West Africa.
“Nigeria is of key security interest to us.
“When you have cousins like 250 million of them, you want them to do well so that one million of them don’t come drifting towards a small country like Ghana,” he said.
The president added that he prays daily for Nigeria’s progress and stability to ensure regional balance and cooperation.
“I wake up to pray every day for Nigerians so that one million of them don’t come drifting towards a small country like Ghana,” he added.
Mahama’s comments have since generated reactions online, with many observers highlighting the close demographic, economic and historical ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
