The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has called for urgent action to end rising xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.
The Commission stressed that crime has no nationality.
Chairperson of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made the call in a statement, condemning increasing hostility, harassment and violence targeted at foreigners in parts of South Africa.
Dabiri-Erewa said that criminal acts committed by individuals should not be used as justification for profiling or attacking entire nationalities.
She noted that many Nigerians living in South Africa were law-abiding citizens contributing positively to the economy and social development of their host communities.
According to her, the growing trend of xenophobic attacks threatens peaceful coexistence and undermines the long-standing diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
The NiDCOM boss urged South African authorities to take decisive diplomatic and security measures to protect lives and property, as well as ensure that perpetrators of xenophobic violence were brought to justice.
She also appealed to community leaders, civil society groups and citizens to promote tolerance, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among Africans.
Dabiri-Erewa reiterated the commission’s commitment to engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders to safeguard the welfare and rights of Nigerians in the diaspora.
She further advised Nigerians residing abroad to remain law-abiding and avoid actions capable of tarnishing the image of the country.
