The Diocese of Aguata, Anglican Communion, has called on the Federal Government to urgently address Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, which it noted is threatening peaceful coexistence across the country.

The call formed part of a seven-point communiqué issued at the end of the Third Session of the Seventh Synod of the Diocese, held at Saint Andrew’s Parish, Ezira, in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The communiqué, jointly signed by the President of the Synod and Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, and the Clerical Synod Secretary, Rev. Canon Uzochukwu Muojekwu, expressed concern over what it described as the deepening state of insecurity in the nation.

According to the church leaders, urgent and practical measures must be taken to stem the tide of violence and restore confidence in the country’s security architecture.

The Synod also condemned the persistent high level of corruption in the country, noting that the menace continues to undermine national development and good governance.

Effect on national unity

“The deepening state of insecurity in Nigeria is seriously affecting peaceful coexistence, while corruption remains a major obstacle to national progress,” the communiqué stated.

The church, however, commended the Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, for what it described as sustained efforts in advancing the fortunes of the Diocese through grassroots evangelism, infrastructural development, capital investments and other transformative initiatives.

The Synod prayed for God’s continued guidance, protection and wisdom for the bishop as he continues to lead the Diocese.

The gathering also applauded the people of Ezira for successfully hosting the synod and congratulated Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on his re-election for a second term in office.

While commending the governor for establishing the Agunechemba vigilante outfit as part of efforts to strengthen security across the state, the Synod urged the government to ensure effective supervision of the group.

It stressed the need for proper orientation and firm control to guarantee that members operate professionally and in line with established laws and standards.

The church further praised Governor Soludo’s developmental strides across Anambra State and prayed for a peaceful and successful second tenure that would bring greater progress and prosperity to the state.

The synod ended with renewed calls for security, accountability and responsible leadership at all levels of government as essential ingredients for national stability and sustainable development.
