Gunmen have killed nine soldiers, one police officer, and several civilians in an ambush at Giro Masa community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the incident while speaking to journalists after visiting victims at the mortuary and the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital Birnin Kebbi, where the injured were receiving treatment.
Describing the attack as barbaric, the governor assured that the state government would cover the medical bills of the wounded and provide support to the families of the fallen security personnel.
He said the incident was tragic and deeply unfortunate, noting that soldiers who risk their lives to protect residents had themselves become victims. He added that the government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
Governor Idris also offered prayers for the deceased and reiterated his administration’s resolve to strengthen security measures.
Following his hospital visit, he proceeded to the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment. The ambush, which occurred on Tuesday night, also saw the attackers set two military gun trucks ablaze.
