NEMA-NIHSA

The National Emergency Management Agency and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency have agreed to strengthen collaboration to improve flood early warning systems and disaster preparedness across Nigeria.

The agreement was reached during a working visit by the Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, to the headquarters of NIHSA in Abuja on Thursday.

Mrs. Umar emphasized the importance of timely release of hydrological forecast data, effective dissemination of early warning information, preparedness coordination, and monitoring of climate-induced disaster trends.

She noted that stronger technical engagement between both agencies through a strategic flood early warning platform would support proactive disaster management, anticipatory action, and reduce the impact of flooding and related hazards nationwide.

According to her, enhanced synergy between NEMA and NIHSA would strengthen national efforts toward risk-informed flood preparedness, coordinated emergency response planning, and the development of resilient communities.

The NEMA Director General also highlighted the agency’s ongoing engagements with stakeholders at national and sub-national levels following the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook.

She explained that the engagements are focused on promoting preparedness actions and early mitigation measures in flood-prone communities across the country.

Responding, the Director General of NIHSA, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustained collaboration with NEMA through the provision of timely hydrological data and technical support.

Mr. Mohammed stated that stronger institutional partnership remains critical to reducing the impact of flooding and other water-related disasters in vulnerable communities nationwide.
