The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has urged Christian and Muslim faithful to unite in prayer for the nation and uphold the values of peace, love and tolerance as they mark Ash Wednesday and Ramadan.
In a message delivered on February 18, 2026, the Police Commissioner called on believers across the state to align their faiths in seeking divine intervention for Nigeria.
He stressed that both sacred observances share deep spiritual significance.
Orutugu encouraged adherents of Christianity and Islam, particularly in Anambra State, to sustain the message of harmony by demonstrating love, forgiveness and mutual respect in their daily interactions.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer, fasting and repentance leading to Easter in the Christian calendar.
The solemn day calls Christians to reflect on human mortality, acknowledge sinfulness and renew their commitment to spiritual growth and salvation.
Similarly, Ramadan represents a sacred month in Islam dedicated to fasting, devotion and spiritual discipline.
During the period, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset, while engaging in deeper reflection, charity and obedience to the teachings of Islam.
The Commissioner noted that both observances emphasize repentance, self-examination and spiritual renewal, making this year’s simultaneous commemoration a powerful reminder of shared moral values.
Strengthening bonds of unity
He appealed to residents of Anambra State to use the sacred season to strengthen bonds of unity and promote peaceful coexistence across religious lines.

Activities marking the memorial included a church service held at the State Command Headquarters, where Christian faithful participated in prayers and worship.
The service also featured the symbolic application of ashes on the foreheads of worshippers, signifying humility and penitence.
The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security across the state throughout the holy season and urged citizens to remain law-abiding while supporting efforts to sustain peace and stability.
