ANSACA moves to boost HIV testing, awareness in tertiary institutions

The Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA) has inaugurated an Action Committee to coordinate HIV response activities across tertiary institutions in the state.

The Executive Director of ANSACA, Dr Nkem Okeke, said during the inauguration on Wednesday in Awka.

Okeke said the initiative was aimed at strengthening awareness, testing and treatment among young people in the state.

He said the initiative aligned with the agency’s State Strategic Transformation and Sustainability Plan  2026–2028 and the global UNAIDS 95-95-95 target toward ending the HIV epidemic.

He advised members of the committee to champion a youth-friendly, data-driven and impact-focused HIV response across campuses in the state.

According to him, the committee will coordinate HIV awareness campaigns, peer education, voluntary counselling and testing, as well as linkage to care for students and staff of tertiary institutions.

“The initiative aligns with the vision of the administration of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo to build a healthier and more prosperous Anambra through improved healthcare interventions and youth engagement,” he said.

The committee is headed by Mr Emeka Nwabunwanne as Chairman, while Mr Enendu Chisimdi will serve as Secretary.

Okeke urged residents, especially young people, to know their HIV status, remain healthy and help to stop stigma associated with the disease.

“Together, we are raising a healthier, HIV-free generation,” he said.
