Flood ravages Ogidi as residents cry out over destroyed roads, homes, livelihoods

Flood disaster

Residents of Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State have intensified calls for urgent government intervention over persistent flooding that continues to disrupt lives, destroy property and cripple economic activities in the area.

The worsening environmental situation has sparked growing concern among youths, traditional leaders and other community stakeholders, who described the impact as severe and unbearable.

During a peaceful public appeal, youths of the community lamented the devastating effect of the recurring floods on roads, homes, farmlands and business premises, especially during heavy rainfall.

Carrying placards with various inscriptions, the protesters expressed fears over the safety of residents, the survival of the community and the future of children whose education and daily movement have been severely affected by the flooding.

President of Ogidi Youths, Chris Obi-Okafor, who led the appeal, described the situation as a major humanitarian challenge that requires immediate attention from relevant authorities.

According to him, farmlands and economic trees have been destroyed, businesses are collapsing and several roads within the community remain submerged whenever it rains, making movement difficult for residents.

Obi-Okafor further noted that many school children are often unable to attend classes during rainfall periods due to flooded roads, warning that the situation could have long-term consequences on the community’s educational and economic development.

Appeal to Tinubu, Soludo

He appealed to the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government and the Prof. Chukwuma Soludo-led Anambra State Government to urgently intervene and provide lasting solutions to the recurring flood menace.

Also speaking, the traditional ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Alexander Onyido, expressed deep concern over the persistent flooding, noting that major roads and market areas are frequently inundated after heavy rainfall.

The monarch observed that the development has disrupted commercial activities, displaced residents and created serious mobility and economic challenges for the community.

Igwe Onyido assured residents that he would continue to engage the state government on the need for immediate intervention to prevent possible loss of lives and reduce the growing hardship caused by the flooding.

Community leaders maintained that the protest remained peaceful and was driven purely by urgent survival concerns, while calling on authorities at all levels to respond swiftly before the situation deteriorates further.
