The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Anambra State Command, has advised Anambra residents of riverine communities to stay alert and be ready to move to higher ground once water levels start rising.

State Commandant, Maku Olatunde gave the advice on Monday at the State Command Headquarters, Awka as part of the Command’s proactive awareness campaign aimed at reducing the impact of flooding and related hazards.

Speaking on behalf of the State Commandant, the Head of Media and Tactical Operations, SC Okadigbo Edwin, noted that heavy rains usually come with higher risks of flooding, building collapse, erosion, and other environmental hazards.

Comprehensive mitigation strategies

He confirmed the Corps partnership with the State Government, NEMA, SEMA, Local Government Chairmen and other partners, including activation of comprehensive mitigation strategies to cushion impact of any incidents during the 2026 rainy season.

“In line with this, the Command’s Disaster Management Unit has commenced sensitization and continues to engage key stakeholders across flood-prone LGAs to strengthen preparedness, reduce flood impact, and protect lives and livelihoods,” he added.

Maku further warned residents to stop dumping refuse in drainages and water channels, stressing that the practice would worsen flooding and other avoidable disasters this rainy season.

He explained that most of such incidents were preventable if residents adopted responsible waste disposal habits and complied with safety guidelines.

He urged citizens to clear drainages around homes and business premises regularly, avoid constructing on waterways, and refrain from any activity that obstructs water flow.

The NSCDC described blocked drainage channels as leading cause of floods across communities, often resulting in loss of lives and property damage.
