Kano SUBEB teachers’recruitment under legislative scrutiny

Kano Assembly

The Kano State House of Assembly has called for a comprehensive review of the recent teachers’ recruitment exercise conducted by the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board, citing widespread irregularities in the process.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Murtala Musa, who represents Dambatta Constituency, during plenary presided over by Speaker Jibril Falgore.

While presenting the motion, Musa alleged that the recruitment exercise was marred by inconsistencies, particularly the posting of applicants to interview centres far from their places of residence.

He noted that as Vice Chairman of the relevant committee, lawmakers had previously engaged with the SUBEB Chairman to offer guidance, but their recommendations were not implemented.

He further disclosed that the Assembly had received numerous complaints from across the state, prompting lawmakers to summon the SUBEB Chairman to explain the circumstances surrounding the exercise.

Musa also expressed concern that key stakeholders in the local education sector were sidelined, despite their crucial role in the recruitment process.

He argued that given current economic realities, it would be more practical to recruit and deploy teachers within their respective local government areas to reduce transportation challenges and improve attendance.

Likelihood of absenteeism

Citing an example, he warned that posting a teacher from Doguwa to Warawa could increase absenteeism due to the financial strain of commuting.

Seconding the motion, Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello clarified that the Assembly is not opposed to the recruitment exercise itself but stressed the need for transparency and merit.

He called on SUBEB to introduce a clear cut-off mark for applicants and ensure the process is free from political interference, in line with established regulations.

Bello also supported the idea of posting teachers within their local government areas to enhance efficiency and accountability.

Following deliberations, the House constituted an ad hoc committee to invite the SUBEB Chairman to appear before it and defend the recruitment process.
