El-Rufai’s bail ruling adjourned till June

A Kaduna State High Court has postponed its ruling on the bail application of former governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai to June 2026, extending proceedings in the closely watched corruption case against him.

The decision was announced by Justice Darius Khobo following arguments from both the defence and prosecution on the bail request.

The court had earlier fixed April 21 for the ruling but opted for more time to review submissions and responses presented by both sides.

El-Rufai is currently facing multiple charges brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), including allegations of abuse of office, financial misconduct, and irregular payments during his time in office from 2015 to 2023.

He had earlier denied all charges.

The matter runs alongside a separate case at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, where the former governor was recently granted bail under strict conditions, including financial guarantees and mandatory reporting obligations.

Despite that development, the state-level proceedings remain ongoing and are expected to play a key role in determining his overall legal position.

At the latest hearing, prosecutors argued against granting bail, pointing to the seriousness of the allegations and potential risks involved.

Defence counsel, however, maintained that the offences are bailable and insisted their client poses no flight risk.

With the ruling now deferred, attention shifts to June, when the court is expected to deliver its decision on the bail application.
