The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered and dismantled a suspected internet fraud training centre, popularly known as a “Yahoo academy,” in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The commission said its operatives carried out a sting operation at Becki Estate in Karu, Abuja, leading to the arrest of 31 suspects, including two alleged kingpins and several trainees.
According to the EFCC, items recovered during the raid include mobile phones, 18 laptops and other digital devices believed to have been used for fraudulent activities.

Preliminary investigations by the agency revealed that some of the recruits were allegedly lured from Benue State with promises of legitimate employment but were later confined in the facility and trained in internet fraud.
The commission added that the movements of the recruits were reportedly restricted, while their phones were seized to prevent communication with the outside world.
It further disclosed that the trainees were subjected to strict control measures, with reports of harsh conditions and alleged physical punishment to enforce compliance.
The EFCC said all the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, reiterating its commitment to tackling cybercrime networks across the country.
