Kano Deputy Gov. resigns amid impeachment plot

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Aminu Gwarzo, has resigned from his position amid reported impeachment moves by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Gwarzo’s resignation was said to have been tendered on Friday morning, according to sources.

His spokesperson, Malam Ibrahim Shuaibu, confirmed the development, saying the resignation had been formally communicated.

“Yes, it is true. The deputy governor has resigned from his position,” Shuaibu said, declining further comments on the circumstances surrounding the decision.

Although no official reason was given, the resignation followed recent tensions between Gwarzo and the state legislature.

The House of Assembly had reportedly levelled allegations of misconduct against the deputy governor, linked to his refusal to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside Gov. Abba Yusuf.

Yusuf had joined the APC on Jan. 26, a development that led to significant political and administrative changes in the state.

In the aftermath of the defection, the governor effected a series of changes within the government, including the removal of the Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa.

He also relieved the Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, Alhaji Shehu Sagagi, of his appointment, citing ongoing restructuring efforts to improve service delivery.

Gwarzo’s resignation is expected to trigger constitutional processes for the appointment of a new deputy governor, subject to the approval of the Kano State House of Assembly.
