The Nigerian Navy has escalated efforts to restore security along the Calabar–Oron waterways in Cross River State, launching a coordinated offensive that has disrupted militant operations in the area.
Personnel from NNS Victory and the Forward Operating Base Ibaka carried out targeted clearance missions on Dayspring Island, a location recently linked to rising cases of kidnapping and other criminal activities.
According to a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the operation also saw the establishment of a forward security post at Idung One, popularly known as Peacock Crossing, to reinforce surveillance and control across the creeks.
Naval forces, working alongside troops from the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade, advanced through the waterways, forcing suspected militants to abandon their camps while tightening security around key channels.
During the exercise, security operatives uncovered and destroyed a hideout associated with a suspected militant leader identified as Juju in the Idung axis.
Two boats fitted with outboard engines were recovered, and a suspected informant was arrested and is currently being interrogated.
As part of measures to consolidate gains, authorities have imposed a 13-hour restriction on maritime activities, running from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m., aimed at limiting the movement of criminal elements.
The Navy says the sustained operation has dealt a significant blow to militant networks in the area.
It reaffirmed its resolve to secure Nigeria’s waterways and curb maritime crime.
