“We are compelling Fubara to run”: Rivers leaders say, pick APC nomination forms for him

A group of elders and political leaders from Rivers State have drafted Governor Siminalayi Fubara into the 2027 gubernatorial race by purchasing his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The delegation was led by Awaji-Inombek Abiante, who represents the Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency, and carried out the purchase on behalf of the governor.

Addressing journalists shortly after, Abiante said the move was driven by public demand rather than the governor’s directive.

He described it as a grassroots initiative funded by ordinary citizens across the state.

“He didn’t send us here,” Abiante asserted, adding: “It is only after this that he may even become aware that we have acquired the forms.

“We are compelling him. He cannot escape from his people.”

The lawmaker downplayed the novelty of the action, noting that it follows a familiar political pattern.

He cited a similar move by the Governance Advisory Council in Lagos, which obtained forms for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to him, the development underscores that democracy is shaped by popular will rather than financial influence.

The delegation pointed to Fubara’s record in infrastructure and economic development as justification for their endorsement, referencing projects such as the Trans-Kalabari Road, Andoni Access, and initiatives around the Blue Economy.

When questioned about the governor’s standing within the APC and the broader political climate in Rivers State, Abiante maintained that Fubara commands significant grassroots support.

“This is the first time that the citizens of Rivers State have had someone who is committed to their service—a man who comprehends the struggles of the people,” he added.
