Former Federal Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission, Obunike Ohaegbu on Saturday declared intention to contest House of Representatives seat for Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency.
He said the decision which he described as “difficult but deliberate,” was informed by extensive consultations with family members and political associates.
Speaking at his country home in Ebe, Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area, Ohaegbu, popularly known as “Nwa Miss”, said his going to National Assembly under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was not for boreholes, streetlights or token projects.
He described his mission as bigger—the transformation of his constituency and the Southeast at large, which he noted was driven by desire to provide effective representation for the constituency.
He listed projects he is currently championing as National Coordinator of the Southeast Patriots to include gas infrastructure to power industries across the Southeast and functional eastern ports to decongest Lagos and boost regional trade.
“Other projects include dredging of the River Niger to unlock economic potential, completion of the Port Harcourt–Aba–Enugu–Maiduguri rail corridor.
Job creation projects
“These are the real issues that will create jobs, empower our people, and reposition our region economically,” he added.
He recounted his early life struggles, including losing his father shortly after birth and raised by his mother, who later became a teacher through intervention of a community leader.
Ohaegbu said the experience shaped his commitment to community service and people-oriented development.
He enumerated his track record, especially while at the Public Complaints Commission including facilitating employment and opportunities for several indigenes of the constituency.
The aspirant further referenced his involvement in community development initiatives, particularly through the Odi Mma Ukpor platform.
Setting out his legislative agenda, the House of Reps hopeful emphasised large-scale economic projects over what he described as “token constituency projects.”
Addressing concerns of local traders, Ohaegbu cited a recent interaction at Nkwo Nnewi market, where business owners lamented regulatory challenges and economic hardship.
He pledged to advocate fair policies and stronger protection for traders if elected.
Poor representation
While criticizing current representation in the constituency, he attributed the shortcomings to systemic issues in leadership selection.
He called for unity among the three local government areas, urging stakeholders to support his bid for the ADC ticket.
Ohaegbu also reaffirmed his loyalty to the ADC leadership, led by David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, and noted the party’s endorsement of Peter Obi as its preferred presidential candidate in the South-East.
He called for grassroots mobilisation, encouraging supporters to register with the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The difference starts with you,” he said, formally launching his campaign under the banner “Nwa Miss 2027.”
