Apprentice kills master with pestle, injures wife

A 21-year old apprentice identified as Chiemerie Anieke has allegedly killed his master for reportedly keeping late night in Onyia Uke Street, Fegge, Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident happened Sunday morning in Onitsha after his master, simply identified as Ikechukwu Nwite confronted him for returning home late Saturday night.

A viral video showed neighbours filing out of a morgue after depositing the deceased body.

A commentator in the video said the man, popularly known as Turn by turn at Drug Market, Bridge Head, Onitsha was hacked down by his apprentice with a pestle, leading to his death.

“The man had scolded his apprentice on Sunday morning for coming back late Saturday night.

“Unknown to him, the boy had prepared for him, and shortly after, hit his master’s head with a pestle,” echoed the vioce behind the video

The suspect was also said to have attacked his master’s wife, Mrs. Ogechukwu Nwite, who is the manager of their business, but she was lucky to be rescued by neighbours, and currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

Now in police custody

Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga said the suspect is currently in custody while the pestle has been recovered from the scene.

He said: “The male suspect, Chiemerie Anieke, aged 21, who allegedly used a pestle to strike his master, Mr. Ikechukwu Nwite, on the head, resulting in his death, and also attacked his wife, Mrs. Ogechukwu Nwite, in the early hours of February 15, 2026 in Onitsha, is currently in custody. The pestle has been recovered from the scene.

“Preliminary information reveals that the suspect was allegedly provoked by the manner in which the late Ikechukwu admonished him over his bad behaviour, including pilfering money meant for the shop, staying out late at night, and taking drugs.

“Meanwhile, Ikechukwu’s wife was rescued and taken to the hospital, where she is currently responding to treatment.

“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for a comprehensive investigation and to ensure that justice is served.”
