Anambra NYCN rejects tenure elongation, condemns ‘vendetta-driven’ suspension attempt

The Anambra State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has restated its firm opposition to any form of tenure elongation for national officers and any attempt to alter the constitutionally recognised youth age bracket of 18–35 years.

The chapter had earlier, in September 2025, publicly rejected the proposed Tenure Elongation Congress held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, which sought to extend the youth age limit to 45 years—an action they described as unconstitutional.

A previous statement jointly signed by former State Chairmen Chief Obumnike Asuzu, Dr. Nwabufo Nwankwo, Comrade Frank Maduka, and the incumbent Chairman, Comrade Surveyor Obi Emeka Chukwudi, had also congratulated former NYCN National President Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo on completing his second term.

However, following the congress, Sukubo reportedly announced the suspension of Obi as Anambra State Chairman and attempted to impose an acting chairman—an action Obi described as illegal.

The only offence

Obi said the only “offence” of his leadership was insisting on due process and adherence to the NYCN constitution.

He noted that Sukubo had completed his final term and that a new national leadership had emerged, rendering attempts to interfere in Anambra affairs “dead on arrival.”

He also expressed concern that individuals who are no longer age-qualified to hold elective positions are fueling internal crisis despite benefiting from the stability restored under his administration.

The Anambra NYCN reaffirmed its alignment with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, which has consistently opposed tenure elongation nationwide.

Obi described Sukubo’s moves as “vendetta-driven,” urging overaged members to assume advisory roles rather than destabilise the Council.
