The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council has expressed shock over sudden death of one of its dedicated members, Mr. Alphonsus Nweze, who tragically lost his life in a motor accident.
The Chapel, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Chuks Ilozue and Secretary, Lucy Osuizigbo-Okechukwu described Nweze as a seasoned journalist, respected for his professionalism, integrity and unwavering commitment to truth and justice.
It noted that the deceased contributed immensely to the development of journalism in the State and beyond through his insightful reports and strong advocacy for social justice.
“Nweze’s passing has created a void that will be difficult to fill, and his legacy of dedication and courage will continue to inspire members.
“The Chapel deeply mourns this painful loss and extends its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, friends, colleagues and the entire media community.
“We pray that God Almighty grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement added.
Police commiserates
Meanwhile, State Police Command has also commiserated with the Nigeria Union of Journalists and Anambra State Correspondents Chapel over the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, in a statement signed by the spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga described the death as tragic and untimely
“On behalf of the officers and men of the Command, Commissioner of Police commiserate with the Nigeria Union of Journalists and Anambra State Correspondents Chapel over the tragic and untimely demise of Mr. Alphonsus Nweze, a dedicated journalist with Apex News, an online publication.
“Mr. Nweze, a respected and committed member of the Correspondents’ Chapel, sadly lost his life in a fatal road accident in the afternoon of Tuesday 7th October 2025 along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway.
“His passing is deeply painful, leaving behind his family, friends, and colleagues who cherished his passion for truth, integrity, and service to society through journalism.
“The Command acknowledges Mr. Nweze as a diligent and courageous reporter whose work contributed immensely to shaping the information landscape of the Security report in the State.
“His dedication to fair and responsible reporting earned him the respect of the Police and the public alike.
“The Commissioner of Police prays for the peaceful repose of his soul and for God’s comfort upon his family, colleagues and the media community in this moment of grief.
“The Anambra State Police Command joins all journalists and well-meaning Ndi Anambra in mourning this irreplaceable gem.”
