Nigeria’s electoral future is under renewed scrutiny as the European Union and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) warn that delays in electoral reforms could endanger the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the European Union Election Observation Mission to lNEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu expressed concern over the uncertainty surrounding the legal framework for upcoming elections.
He revealed that 142 reform proposals have already been submitted to the National Assembly, but progress remains slow.

EU Chief Observer, Barry Andrews, urged Nigeria to “move beyond half-measures” and guarantee transparency
Andrews stressed that unresolved issues in judicial reforms and result transparency remain key challenges.
Both INEC and the EU emphasised that unless the National Assembly takes swift action, the country risks repeating the same systemic flaws that marred previous elections.
