Uganda arrests 62 Nigerians over alleged illegal stay, church operation

Uganda’s National Citizenship and Immigration Control has arrested 62 Nigerians for allegedly residing in the country without valid immigration documents and operating an unregistered church in Adjumani District.

The agency disclosed this in a statement, saying the suspects were apprehended during an enforcement operation carried out by immigration officials in the northern district bordering South Sudan.

According to the authorities, preliminary investigations showed that the Nigerians were engaged in religious activities through a church said to have been operating without the required authorisation from relevant government agencies.

The immigration agency stated that the suspects were also found to be living in Uganda without valid residence permits or other legal travel documents as required under the country’s immigration laws.

It said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts by the Ugandan government to enforce compliance with immigration regulations and curb illegal migration and undocumented activities within the country.

The agency added that the suspects were being processed in line with Ugandan laws and would face appropriate legal action after investigations.

Officials urged foreign nationals residing in Uganda to regularise their immigration status and comply with all legal requirements guiding residence, business and religious activities in the country.
