NCoS: We’ll convert prison farms into agribusiness hubs for inmate reforms

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says it will convert custodial farms across the country into full-scale agribusiness hubs to boost food security and rehabilitate inmates.

Controller-General Sylvester Nwakuche announced the initiative at the Dukpa Farm Centre in Gwagwalada, Abuja, during the flag-off of the 2026 farming season.

He said the programme is designed to equip inmates with practical agricultural skills while positioning the Service as a contributor to national food production.

Operations at the centre include crop farming, poultry, piggery, and cattle rearing under an integrated system.

Nwakuche noted that the initiative aligns with government priorities on food security, leveraging the Service’s vast land and inmate workforce.

He added that the goal is to transform inmates into productive citizens upon release.

Despite setbacks in 2025 due to price drops and natural disasters, he expressed optimism for improved yields in 2026, citing better planning and early rollout.

He also called for private-sector partnerships to support mechanisation, funding, and technical expertise, stressing that government alone cannot drive the programme.

The NCoS said the initiative will be implemented across all correctional farm centres nationwide as part of broader reforms to enhance rehabilitation and economic reintegration.
