The Golden-20 Association of Awgbu, in Orumba North LGA of Anambra State, has donated two blocks of eight-room lodges to serve National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the area.
Each block, comprising four rooms, was constructed at Community Secondary School and Community High School in Awgbu.
This is to provide suitable accommodation for corps members teaching there.
Additionally, at Awgbu Grammar School, the association drilled a borehole, built modern toilet facilities, and renovated a five-classroom block.
During the inauguration ceremony, the association’s President, Chief Oliver Okoli, revealed that 10 university scholarships worth between ₦800,000 and ₦1 million each were awarded to students for the 2024 academic year.
Okoli also celebrated 10 graduates who successfully completed their degrees under the association’s 2019 scholarship scheme.
Also speaking, Prof. Ngozi-Chuma-Udeh, Commissioner for Education praised the group for its commitment to educational development
Chuma-Udeh emphasising the importance of supporting corps members who help bridge the teaching gap in schools.
She disclosed that the state had recently recruited 8,115 teachers and upgraded 21 schools to smart school status, with plans to establish one in Awgbu.
Capt. Casmir Nwafor (rtd.), Chairman, Orumba North LGA, announced plans to build more corps lodges.
He called on community leaders to enhance security for the safety of serving corps members.
NYSC state Coordinator, Mrs. Pauline Ojisua, lauded the association’s effort, assuring that the facilities would be fully utilised
Ojisua noted that the availability of lodges would allow for more corps members to be posted to the area.
She urged corps members to demonstrate discipline and gratitude through their service.
Community Secondary School principal, Rev. Sr. Mary Nwafor, also appealed for the establishment of a smart school in the community.
Expressing gratitude, corps member Mrs. Eucharia Nwobere and scholarship recipient Ms. Chisom Igbo pledged to make the most of the opportunity and give back through dedication and academic excellence.
The event was capped by the presentation of scholarship cheques to the beneficiaries.
