HIV: Lagos, Benue, Akwa Ibom lead in Antiretroviral Therapy recipients

The number of adults and children receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) across Nigeria stood at varying levels among states in the first quarter of 2026, according to data from the National Data Repository.


The data, covering January to March, showed that Lagos State recorded the highest number of persons on ART with 8,242, followed by Benue with 6,870 and Akwa Ibom with 5,522.


Rivers recorded 4,827 persons on treatment, while Anambra and Taraba posted 4,648 and 4,507 respectively.


Other states with notable figures include Kano with 4,092, Kaduna with 3,146, Oyo with 3,070 and Ogun with 2,877.


Delta accounted for 2,809 persons on ART, while Adamawa and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recorded 2,538 and 2,488 respectively.


Plateau and Nasarawa posted 2,382 and 2,333, while Edo recorded 2,239. Borno and Sokoto followed with 2,172 and 2,130 respectively.


Further breakdown showed that Imo and Abia recorded 2,087 and 2,072, while Jigawa and Enugu posted 1,982 and 1,924 respectively.


Bauchi and Cross River recorded 1,882 and 1,866, while Yobe and Kebbi posted 1,858 and 1,845 respectively.
Zamfara recorded 1,679 persons on ART, followed by Niger with 1,666 and Kogi with 1,616.


Ondo and Kwara posted 1,535 and 1,496 respectively, while Bayelsa recorded 1,133 and Ebonyi 1,111.


Gombe recorded 1,052, Osun 1,026 and Katsina 1,015, while Ekiti had the lowest figure at 564.


The data highlights the distribution of HIV treatment coverage across the country, reflecting ongoing efforts to scale up access to lifesaving antiretroviral therapy.


The National Data Repository noted that the figures form part of routine monitoring to support Nigeria’s response to HIV/AIDS and improve public health outcomes.
