Nnewi Union in Atlanta Georgia USA has picked the medical bills for indigent patients in selected hospitals in Nnewi, Anambra state.
The group, represented by Mrs Grace Okeke, Mrs Chioma Egbonu, Lady Cynthia Anigbogu and Mrs Udechukwu Chioma Agbasi took the intervention to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi.
Addressing hospital management, Okeke, leader of the group said the intervention would have been carried out during the yuletide but for industrial action the hospital participated in.
She disclosed that the sum of N10million was made available for the bill settlement of awaiting patients.
“Nnewi Union has been carrying out the social responsibility program of settling the hospital bills for the settlement of bills of awaiting patients for the past eight years.
“Many of our members actually turned up for the program last December but had to return to their base due to the industrial action,” she added.
Chairman, Medical Advisory Council (CMAC) for NAUTH, Prof Ogochukwu Ezejiofor in company of other principal officers of the hospital appreciated the kind gesture of Nnewi Union in Atlanta Georgia USA.
While likening the group’s intervention to service to God, Ezejiofor said the hospital would not tolerate keeping any patients unnecessarily, adding that it is incumbent for the patients to pick their bills.
Some of the patients, majorly women and children expressed gratitude to the group and its representatives for coming to their aid at their hopeless situation.
