Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for public sector workers in Lagos State as part of efforts to ease the burden of rising living costs.

The announcement was made during the International Workers’ Day celebration at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, where the governor, represented by his deputy Obafemi Hamzat, said the payment would apply for the month of May.

He explained that the decision was in response to current economic pressures, including high fuel prices and global economic challenges, noting that the government remains committed to supporting its workforce.

Sanwo-Olu praised Lagos workers for their dedication, describing them as the backbone of the state’s growth and resilience.

He emphasized that the strength of Lagos lies in the daily efforts of its workforce across sectors such as education, healthcare, and public service.

Addressing workers’ concerns, the governor highlighted ongoing efforts to tackle housing and transportation challenges.

He revealed that the state is investing in affordable housing, with thousands of units already completed and more expected before the end of 2026.

The rent-to-own scheme, he noted, requires only a five percent initial payment, making homeownership more accessible.

On transportation, he pointed to continued expansion of the state’s rail system, which has already transported millions of passengers, with further improvements underway to enhance mobility and productivity.

The governor also assured retirees of continued pension payments and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining strong dialogue with organised labour.

Earlier, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, stressed that a motivated workforce remains key to effective service delivery and sustainable development.
