UBEC unleashes ₦5bn school funding drive, targets 14,000 schools nationwide

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) is set to disburse over ₦5 billion under its School-Based Management Committee School Improvement Programme (SBMC-SIP).

This is part of efforts to strengthen basic education across Nigeria.

UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, made the announcement during the national inauguration ceremony and disbursement of the 2023 and 2024 final tranche of the programme in Abuja.

The SBMC-SIP initiative is designed to promote community participation and accountability in school management by providing targeted funding directly to schools.

It represents a significant shift from the traditional Parent-Teacher Association model, positioning local stakeholders at the centre of decision-making and school development.

Garba disclosed that more than 14,000 schools nationwide are expected to benefit from the intervention, underscoring its масштаб and national reach.

Represented by UBEC Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical), Rasaq Akinyemi, she also revealed that over ₦400 million has been approved for disbursement as the final tranche for the 2023 and 2024 programme cycles.

Representing the Minister of Education, Director of Basic Education, Dr. Folake Olatunji-Davies, urged beneficiary committees to uphold strict accountability and ensure transparent use of the funds.

She noted that the programme’s success depends on prudent financial management.

Also speaking, UBEC Board Chairman and former Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, described the initiative as a strategic intervention.

Al-Makura said it is aimed at addressing systemic challenges in the education sector while deepening community ownership.

Cheques were presented to selected schools for the 2023/2024 final tranche onn the occasion.
