Anambra Govt. recruits health workers to strengthen rural health

The Anambra State Government has commenced the recruitment of community-based health workers to improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.

The recruitment exercise took place on Tuesday in Awka and was conducted by the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA).

It was in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA).

Speaking to journalists, Mrs. Chisom Uchem, Executive Secretary of ASPHCDA, said the initiative is aimed at expanding access to affordable and quality healthcare services in rural communities.

“This recruitment is a critical step in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare by deploying trained personnel to underserved areas.

“It will help close the gap between communities and healthcare facilities, ensuring that essential health services are accessible to all.”

She urged successful candidates to serve with compassion and integrity, emphasizing that negligence in healthcare delivery could have serious consequences.

“I must also warn that anyone found using forged documents during this process will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” she added.

Also speaking, Dr. Obiagelu Uchebo, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, said the newly recruited workers will provide basic healthcare.

According to her, they will guide residents to nearby health centres and support pregnant women to ensure safe childbirth.

She noted that the initiative is designed to reduce maternal mortality, stillbirths, and other preventable deaths.

“Each ward across the state will receive at least 10 community-based health workers to help address the current staffing gaps in our primary healthcare centres,”she said
