WHO confirms 2 Hantavirus cases, 5 suspected on cruise ship

The World Health Organisation has confirmed two cases of Hantavirus and identified five suspected cases aboard a cruise ship, raising fresh concerns over health safety on maritime travel.

In a statement, the WHO said the confirmed cases were detected following routine health checks after passengers reported flu-like symptoms during the voyage.

The organisation noted that the suspected cases are currently under observation, with samples undergoing further laboratory analysis.

Hantavirus is a viral infection primarily transmitted through contact with rodents, their urine, droppings, or saliva.

Early symptoms often include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and dizziness, which can progress to more severe respiratory complications if untreated.

Health authorities aboard the vessel have since activated emergency response protocols, including isolating affected individuals, enhancing sanitation measures, and conducting contact tracing among passengers and crew members.

The WHO said it is working closely with relevant maritime and health authorities to contain the situation and prevent further spread.

It also advised travellers to maintain proper hygiene, avoid contact with rodents, and promptly report any symptoms to onboard medical personnel.

Meanwhile, passengers have been urged to remain calm as investigations continue, with assurances that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard public health.
