The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State.

Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, announced the closure this morning.

In a statement, Orah said the closure was necessitated by the need to carry out urgent repairs on a damaged part of the runway.

“There is a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.

She said the emergency repairs will be conducted on that affected portion of the runway from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025.

“In compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has, therefore, closed the runway during this period,” she said.

The decision, she noted, was taken in the interest of passengers and their safety.

Orah explained that while the repairs lasts, the runway will be closed to landings or takeoffs, calling for patience on the part of passengers and airport users.

Orah added, “FAAN appeals to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time.

“All flights to this airport will be diverted to nearby airports,” she said.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection also apologized for the late and unexpected closure notice.
