Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Radda, has charged the newly inaugurated chairmen of Local Government Areas to ensure judicious utilization of public funds
Governor Radda also wants the 34 council bosses to prioritize projects that have direct impact on their citizens.
He was speaking during the swearing-in ceremony for the chairmen administered by Katsina State Chief Judge, Justice Danladi Musa.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, quotes the Governor as stressing the importance of fiscal responsibility in local governance.
“Approach your responsibilities with integrity, transparency, and accountability. Public service is not about personal gain but the greater public good.
“Use every kobo allocated to your councils judiciously for projects that uplift the living standards of your people,” he stressed.
He noted the historic nature of the occasion, where democratically elected councils transitioned to newly elected ones through proper elections.
The Governor also described the event as “the beginning of a new chapter for grassroots governance in the State.”
“As our Local Government leaders, you’re at the forefront of delivering development, promoting peace, and fostering unity within your communities.
The expectations are high because the local government system serves as the closest link between the government and the people.”
Commitment to LG Autonomy
Governor Radda said his government is fully committed to full implementation of the Local Government Autonomy in the state.
He revealed the creation of a new department for for effective performance and efficient utilization of local government resources.
The department, under the Ministry of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, is headed by a Special Adviser in charge of Inspectorate Matters.
The Governor also identified six key priority areas for the chairmen’s attention including education, youth empowerment, and healthcare delivery.
Other areas are agricultural transformation, security and peace building, infrastructure development and environmental Sustainability.
He warned, “I will not tolerate corruption, inefficiency, and negligence. But I assure you of “unwavering support” through guidance, technical assistance, and financial allocations.
APC National Chairman Speaks
The National Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, expressed pleasure with the party’s achievements at the local level.
“We are proud of your achievements because we recognize the critical role of governance in uplifting our people.”
“As someone who has served as a councillor, local government chairman, and governor, I understand the challenges and responsibilities you bear,” Ganduje said.
On local government autonomy, Ganduje cautioned that autonomy does not mean isolation.
“It does not mean you only show up when federal allocations arrive or prioritizing personal gain over public good,” he advised.
