The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, (JONAPWD), Enugu State Chapter, has appealed to Governor Peter Mbah to inaugurate disability commission for the state.
JONAPWD in a statement signed by its Chairman, Onyebuchi Mba, reminded Governor Mbah of his promise to inaugurate the commission by first quarter of 2025.
Governor Mbah, on 14th December 2024 promised to inaugurate the State Disability Commission within the first quarter of 2025.
The statement reads, “We beseech Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to fulfill his promise of inaugurating the state disability commission within the first quarter of 2025.
“This will ensure that the inclusion of persons with disabilities in governance,” the state says.
“Revitalization of Braille Resource Center for the blind under the Smart School Green project will promote inclusive education and accessibility.

It appeals to local government council chairpersons to accommodate PWDs in grassroots governance, to foster diversity and inclusive representation.
The statement also urges all heads of ministries, departments and agencies to show empathy in handling issues affecting PWDs.
It appeals for synergy amongst government offices on disability matters to ensure a cohesive approach to issues affecting PWDs.
Long history of exclusion
JONAPWD Enugu regretted the glaring omission of persons with disabilities from key appointments and decision-making processes within the State Government.
It notes that PWDs have suffered exclusion from governance and leadership positions under Mbah’s administration, just like in previous years.
“This has denied them a voice in shaping policies that affect their lives,” the statement regrets.
“Recent appointments of supervisors and SPA aides by the 17 LGA chairmen without a single person with disability, is discriminatory and insensitive.
“A civilized society is measured by the manner the vulnerable are treated and their matters handled,” the statement concludes.
