The Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, has praised the Anambra chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) for their contributions to the development of sports in the state.
Ibezim gave the commendation on Thursday while receiving the executive members of SWAN in his office at Awka.
He highlighted Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s administration’s strong commitment to sports development.
He also cited its role in promoting physical fitness, youth empowerment, social cohesion and enhancing security across communities.
According to him, the sports media has been instrumental in positively projecting the sports sector through balanced and constructive reporting, despite existing challenges.
“Sports writers are critical partners in our efforts to develop the sector.
“Through responsible journalism, you have helped showcase the potential and progress of sports in Anambra.
” I encourage you to give equal attention to other sports, not just football to inspire greater participation and development across the board,” Ibezim said.
Earlier, SWAN Chairman in Anambra, Mr. Chimezie Anaso, praised the Soludo-led government for its efforts in revitalizing grassroots sports through the reintroduction of school sports programmes.
Anaso highlighted Anambra’s participation in major national competitions and thanked the government for creating opportunities for the state’s talented youths.
However, he pointed out the pressing need for improved sports infrastructure and called on the state government to consider constructing an Olympic-standard stadium.
“We appreciate the support given to young athletes, especially in facilitating their participation in sporting events.
“We are committed to partnering with the government to further develop the sector.
“We also look forward to honoring Gov. Soludo as the Grand Patron of SWAN in Anambra,'” he said.
