We’ve spent over ₦40bn on salaries, pensions – Otti

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia State revealed that his administration has spent over ₦40 billion clearing salary and pension arrears over the past two years.

Speaking at an event marking his second year in office, Otti emphasized the need to restore financial dignity to workers and retirees.

According to him, salaries are now paid by the 28th of every month and full monthly pension payments resumed.

Key Achievements

  • Civil Service: Renovation of Nnamdi Azikiwe Secretariat, digitalization of government operations, and installation of computers.
  • Infrastructure and Economy: Roads in Umuahia and Aba ready for commissioning; ₦1bn empowerment for 10,000 nano-businesses; plans to make Umuahia a power island in collaboration with Enugu DISCO; 7,000 solar streetlights installed to support 24-hour economic activity.
  • Education: 20% budget allocation to education; free basic education policy raised enrolment; 5,300 teachers hired with plans for 4,000 more; smart schools under construction in all 17 LGAs.
  • Healthcare: Over 100 PHCs renovated; 10 general hospitals and 2 specialist centres under renovation; plans for a medical village to curb medical tourism.
  • Security: Operation Crush restored safety in Umunneochi and Isuikwuato.
  • Technology & Trade: Agreement with MTN for full network coverage by Dec 2025; MTN to develop Aba Digital Mall.Sanitation: Abia transformed from one of the dirtiest to among the cleanest states.
  • Governance: Emphasis on accountability, prudent spending, and a private-sector-driven economy.

Otti expressed gratitude to Abians for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to building a functional and prosperous state.

Lawmakers and other dignitaries praised his transformational leadership and pledged continued support.
