The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that 20 million Nigerians—20% of the population—live with mental health conditions.
At a mental health training in Owerri, Dr. Azubike Aliche of the Nigeria-American Institute for Mental Health called the situation alarming
.The training was organised in collaboration with the Centre for Social Awareness, Advocacy and Ethics (CSAAE), a Non Governmental Organisation.
He said Nigeria has the world’s highest depression rate, yet only 10% of affected individuals receive care.
The four-day training, supported by NMHP USA and CSAAE, aims to equip non-specialists to identify and manage mental health symptoms in local communities.
Stakeholders, including Imo State’s health commissioner and mental health advocates, emphasized the need for improved policies, resources, and grassroots outreach.
CSAAE also highlighted its ongoing support, including a toll-free helpline (08009001000), to enhance mental health services across Nigeria.
