Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State has advised motorists to ensure their vehicles were in good condition before hitting the roads.
Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno said the advice has become necessary as rainy season intensifies across parts of the country.
She warned that roads become increasingly slippery during rainfall, making careful driving essential.
She expressed concern over continued use of worn-out tyres by some drivers, noting that such tyres lose proper grip on the road.
According to Asekhuno, worn-out tyres reduce effective contact with the road surface, thereby causing vehicles to skid or veer off when brakes are applied.
Underscoring the need for motorists to reduce speed during rainfall, the FRSC boss argued that although recommended speed limit remained 100 kilometres per hour, drivers must slow down significantly when roads were wet.
She also highlighted the importance of functional windscreen wipers, advising drivers to ensure both the wipers and water reservoirs were in proper working condition to maintain clear visibility.
“Drivers must carry out routine vehicle checks before driving. They must regularly check their tyres, oil and water levels.
“Motorists must obey traffic rules, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and to pull over safely when rainfall becomes too heavy and visibility was poor,” she cautioned.
Asekhauno reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safety on Nigerian roads, especially during the challenging rainy season.
