Anambra man demands justice over mother’s death

A middle-aged man, Chukwunenye Nweke has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to order a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of his mother.

Nweke made the call in a statement titled “Re: Response to controversies surrounding alleged Police statement papers dated 22nd March 2013,” which he personally signed.

He alleged that police officers from Zone 13 Police Headquarters, Ukpo caused his mother’s death through what he described as unprofessional conduct during a raid of his mother’s private room in search of court documents.

He claimed the officers, allegedly sponsored by one Dr. Mrs. Aguiyi Anulli and others, stormed the family residence Wednesday, January 21, 2026 in an attempt to arrest him over allegations of attempted kidnapping, cyberbullying and stalking.

Nweke dismissed the accusations as false, misleading, fabricated, fraudulent and defamatory and should therefore be treated as such by the public.

According to him, his mother who was hypertensive became traumatized on the said date, she was rushed to hospital same date and she died on Saturday January 31, 2026 at the Government Hospital, Amanunke.

Addressing reporters in Awka, Nweke said, “This press statement is issued to address the controversies surrounding certain Police Statement Papers dated 22nd March, 2013, which some police officers in Anambra State have allegedly presented as a true and accurate account of events.

“I, Mr. Chukwunenye Nweke of Umudioka Village,Awka, wish to categorically state to the general public and the international community that I am not, and have never been, a fugitive from the law.

Allegation of arrest evasion

“At no time in the year 2013 did I go into hiding or evade arrest by officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID), Awka.

“The Police Statement Papers in which I was allegedly described as a fugitive from police arrest by the State CID, Awka, from 23rd February 2013 to 13th March 2013, in connection with an alleged case of attempted kidnapping, are false, misleading, fabricated, fraudulent, and defamatory, and should therefore be treated as such by the public.

“Furthermore, I challenge any police officer or individual who holds a contrary position to my assertion to publicly disclose, release, or publish the comprehensive Police Investigation Report conducted on this matter by the State CID, Awka, in 2013.

“Any person or police officer who insists that the documents portraying me as a fugitive from arrest on 23rd February 2013 are genuine must substantiate such claims by producing the Certified True Copy of the comprehensive Police Investigation Report issued by the Anambra State Police Command, State CID, Awka, in 2013.

“Until such credible and verifiable evidence is produced, the allegations portraying me as a fugitive should be regarded as baseless, unfounded, and malicious.

Nweke’s declarations

“In light of the foregoing, I hereby make the following declarations:

  1. Any police officer who states in his official investigation report that the said Police Statement Papers are genuine and indicts me of fugitive or cyberbullying/ stalking/ defamation (false publication) should note that he automatically assumes the legal responsibility of proving that I was indeed a fugitive in connection with the alleged attempted kidnapping in 2013 and other alleged criminal offences that maybe brought against me by said police officer.
  2. Where such a police officer fails to provide credible evidence to support such allegations, he shall be held legally accountable for relying on false, fraudulent, misleading, and defamatory documents or materials to indict me as a fugitive and other offences in an alleged criminal matter.
  3. Furthermore, if any legal practitioner—whether an Officer-in-Charge (OC) Legal, State Counsel, Police Prosecutor, or private legal practitioner—files any charge or information before a court relying on the said fraudulent, misleading, and defamatory police statement papers and other fraudulent materials in this case, such practitioner should note that a formal petition may be submitted against him or her to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) for professional misconduct, including but not limited to malicious prosecution and the filing of false information before a court of law.

This press statement is therefore issued in the interest of truth, justice, and the protection of my reputation.
