APGA backs Electoral Act, disbands FCT executives, sets 2026 primaries

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has commended the passage of the Electoral Act 2026 and approved key measures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This is contained in a communiqué issued in Friday in Awka, at the end of the NWC meeting.

The committee lauded the National Assembly for the prompt passage of the Act and President Bola Tinubu for assenting to it.

It noted that the law would enhance the electoral process and strengthen preparations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The NWC also praised innovations in the Act, including provisions on party primaries and digitisation of membership databases, describing them as consistent with global best practices and supportive of internal party democracy.

It, however, urged INEC to align its 2027 election timetable with the provisions of the new law.

On party affairs, the committee acknowledged challenges in the ongoing electronic membership revalidation and registration exercise but assured members of prompt resolution.

It called on members and prospective members to take advantage of the exercise.

The NWC congratulated Anambra  Governor and APGA National Leader, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on his second-term inauguration, attributing the party’s electoral success in the state to his developmental strides.

In a major decision, the committee approved the immediate dissolution of the State Working Committee, Local Government and Ward Executive Committees of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter.

It said a caretaker committee would be constituted in line with the party’s constitution after due notification to INEC.

Ahead of 2027 General Elections

As part of preparations for the 2027 polls, the NWC also approved the convening of stakeholders’ conferences across the six geo-political zones and mandated zonal vice chairmen to coordinate the exercise.

It further ratified the timetable and guidelines for the party’s 2026 primary elections.

On national issues, the committee expressed concern over rising insecurity and urged the President to intensify efforts to curb the menace.

It commended the efforts of security agencies, including the Nigeria Police and the Armed Forces, for their roles in tackling insecurity, especially in northern parts of the country.

The NWC also backed the Senate leadership under Sen. Godswill Akpabio over what it described as defence of constitutional order regarding the defection of Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe.

It called for the invocation of constitutional provisions on the matter.

The committee urged party officials at all levels to maintain discipline and adhere strictly to the party’s constitution, warning that sanctions would be imposed on violators during the primaries.
