The Anambra State Task Force on Human Trafficking has intensified efforts to curb human trafficking and child abuse with a sensitisation programme at Community Secondary School, Agulu-Awka, in Awka South Local Government Area.
The awareness session, themed “Human Trafficking and Abuse,” followed a recent case of physical violence against a student allegedly carried out by her aunt.
The incident, which was promptly reported by the school authority, prompted the intervention of the Task Force.
Officials described the school’s decision to report the case as commendable, noting that it reflects growing community awareness about the dangers of trafficking and abuse.
They said such proactive steps demonstrate that ongoing advocacy across the state is beginning to yield positive results.
During the interactive session, a task force member, Yohanna Rachel, educated students on the meaning of human trafficking, common tactics used by traffickers, and warning signs of abuse.
The facilitator also explained situations that may indicate a child is living with an abuser and outlined practical steps to take when faced with threats or violence.
Speaking up against violations
Rachel encouraged students to speak up and seek help whenever they feel unsafe stressing that silence often emboldens perpetrators, while timely reporting can prevent further harm.
“You have the right to feel safe at home, in school, and everywhere you go.

“If anyone hurts you, threatens you, or makes you uncomfortable, speak up immediately and contact the Task Force using the numbers shared.
“Your voice can protect you and also help protect others,” she said.
To strengthen support mechanisms, the Task Force shared dedicated phone numbers with all students, assuring them of confidentiality and prompt response.
The sensitisation programme forms part of ongoing efforts by the state government to protect vulnerable children, promote safe reporting channels, and build a community that stands firmly against trafficking and all forms of abuse.
Some students and teachers expressed gratitude to the task force for keeping them informed of the antics of human traffickers. They pledged to share the knowledge gained with others for multiplier
