Organizers of Ofala festival, Onitsha Anambra state on Thursday announced that the festival has continued to enjoy elevation as major cultural event in Nigeria and West Africa.
Chairman, Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee, Nn’emeka Maduegbuna stated this at Ime Obi Onicha, Ezechima Square during the Onitsha Ofala 2025 Pre-Festival Press Conference heralding the festival slated for October 7 to November 2, 2025.
He said aside endorsement from Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation and Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Culture from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation as major festival, its UNESCO heritage recognition is underway.
He said, “Since 2019, we’ve pursued key objectives to elevate the Ofala festival as a major cultural event in Nigeria and West Africa.
“Notable recognitions include Nigerian Tourism Development Commission endorsement as major Nigerian festival, United Nations World Tourism Organisation Certificate of Recognition for Excellence and ongoing UNESCO heritage recognition bid.
“These underscore the festival’s importance in promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
Expanding visibility
“In this regard, we’re focused on expanding visibility and attracting a diverse audience and securing strategic partnerships to preserve and promote Ofala’s cultural significance globally.”
He described the festival as celebration of rich heritage of the Onicha Ado N’Idu kingdom.
Maduegbuna assured an exciting and unforgettable experience with range of traditional and modern activities.
“This year’s theme, ‘Njiko na Ntachi,’ emphasizes importance of community and resilience,” showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Onicha Ado N’Idu Kingdom.
“We aim to foster unity, promote resilience, and uphold enduring communal values that define our community,” he added.
Maduegbuna further disclosed other activities lined up for the event to include Iru Ofala and Azu Ofala.
Others are the monarch’s parade and dance, as well as elaborate displays by age-grade societies in colorful uniforms.
“Other events are Ofala annual lecture series named after Obi Nnaemeka Achebe, recognizing his contributions to public relations.”
Other features
According to him, there will also be Oreze art exhibition: a showcase of paintings, sculptures and ceramics featuring works by Nigerian and African artists.
“Ofala youth carnival – colorful street funfair showcasing Onitsha’s cultural heritage, medical, health, and wellbeing community outreach: A series of events promoting health and wellbeing in the community.
“Ofala thanksgiving service to give thanks for the success of the festival
and the monarch’s reign.
“We invite all Nigerians and international visitors to join us in celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Onitsha.
“This year’s festival promises to be an exciting experience, with a range of traditional and modern activities.
“These underscore the festival’s importance in promoting Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
“In this regard, we’re focused on expanding visibility and attracting a diverse audience as well as securing strategic partnerships to preserve and promote Ofala’s cultural significance globally.
“Concerning partnership, we are collaborating with prominent organizations, including National Council for Arts and Culture, Globacom Limited, NigerBev Limited, Guinness Nigeria Plc Zenith Bank, and International Breweries Plc, to support the festival.”
Mobile app launch
Maduegbuna further announced launching of mobile app, an innovative platform, which he said blend the festival with cultural heritage and modern innovation.
“We are excited to announce the launch of our mobile app, available now on both Android and iOS devices.
“This innovative platform brings the festival closer to participants and the global community offering: Real-time updates and announcements; Insights into Ofala tradition and heritage.
“It also offers Multimedia content; photos, videos, and live updates; Seamless festival experience: maps, guides, and notifications.
“The Ofala Mobile App embodies the festival’s blend of cultural heritage and modern innovation, connecting
attendees and well-wishers worldwide with the spirit of ofala.”
On security arrangements ahead of the festival, Maduegbuna, said they are working with security agencies to guarantee adequate security before, during and after the ceremony.”
