Cancer Society petitions EFCC, DSS, Police over alleged false cancer claims

The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force over alleged false cancer claims by a social media influencer, Blessing Okoro popular known as Blessing CEO.

This was contained in NCS statement signed by its National Director of Publicity, Hon. Bashir Mohammed Ranccasu.

They said the petition followed growing public concern over allegations that the influencer falsely claimed to have cancer and solicited donations for treatment.

The society said the move was necessary to uphold accountability, transparency and integrity in cancer advocacy and patient support systems in the country.

It recalled that it had earlier condemned the alleged conduct, describing it as unethical and detrimental to efforts to combat cancer in Nigeria.

According to the NCS, the gravity of the allegations and their potential to erode public trust necessitated escalation to security agencies for thorough investigation.

“The action is in the interest of the general public and to prevent a negative precedent,” the statement said.

The society emphasised that cancer remains a life-threatening disease requiring sincerity, compassion and responsible handling.

It warned that any form of exploitation could undermine the credibility of genuine patients and discourage support for those in need.

CoreTruth reports that the influencer, Blessing CEO, had recently claimed on social media that she was diagnosed with stage four cancer in Enugu and appealed for financial assistance for treatment.

She reportedly received over N12 million from members of the public following the appeal.

However, the claim has since been disputed, with the alleged original owner of the medical result coming forward to accuse the influencer of falsifying the document to support the claim.
