Bala Mohammed’s proposed defection splits Bauchi APC caucus

APC Caucus meeting

The Bauchi State caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been thrown into disarray following moves to admit Governor Bala Mohammed into the party.

The internal rift became evident during a caucus meeting held in Abuja, where members expressed sharply differing opinions over the political and structural implications of the governor’s proposed defection.

In a bid to manage the growing tension, the caucus unanimously agreed to set up a high-powered committee to address the issue. Acting Secretary of the caucus, Mr. Dabo Ismail, said the committee has been tasked with articulating the position, demands, and conditions of the caucus to the party’s national leadership should the defection proceed.

He added that the committee would also engage key stakeholders to ensure an inclusive and smooth negotiation process, represent the caucus in all discussions regarding potential defections from the PDP-led government, and provide regular updates to members.

Despite the division, the caucus maintained that Governor Mohammed is welcome to join the APC. However, it stressed that the party’s national leadership must carry state stakeholders along in any negotiation process.

Speaking after the meeting, Senator Sama’ila Dahuwa, who represents Bauchi North Senatorial District and chairs the caucus, expressed dissatisfaction over what members described as a lack of prior consultation on a matter of such importance.

He disclosed that the newly constituted committee includes top-ranking party figures such as a serving minister, former governors, and two senators, reflecting the seriousness of the issue.

The caucus resolved to formally convey its position and concerns to the APC national leadership, insisting on due process and broader internal consultation.

It also warned that poorly handled integration of new entrants could alienate loyal members and weaken party unity in the state.
