The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to retract a remark he made about broadcaster Seun Okinbaloye and offer a public apology.

In a statement signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union voiced concern over the comment and its broader implications for press freedom and journalist safety.

“The Nigeria Union of Journalists is troubled by the Minister’s statement concerning a media professional.

“Such comments raise serious concerns about the protection of journalists and the preservation of press freedom,” the statement read.

The NUJ noted that it initially withheld its response in anticipation that the Minister would reconsider and withdraw the remark.

However, it added that the lack of any corrective action has further deepened its concerns.
