Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi has appealed to the abductors of schoolchildren to release them immediately.

Obi described the plight of the children as painful reflection of Nigeria’s deepening insecurity.

In a statement, he expressed shock by images showing the condition of the abducted children, particularly the marks of abuse visible on their bodies.

“I am deeply heartbroken by the condition in which these abducted school children are, as seen from their flagellated bodies.

“It is a painful reminder of the depth of insecurity in our land,” he said.

Obi noted that the children’s suffering underscores the long-term consequences of poor governance and societal neglect, reiterating his long-held warning that the failures of today’s society would ultimately be borne by future generations.

“I have always made it clear that the society we abuse today will take its revenge on our children tomorrow. When I first began making that statement, some of these children were not even born.

He restated that the abuse of governance and society today produce devastating consequences long after the abusers are gone.

Lasting impressions

On country’s growing debt burden, Obi argued that decisions taken by current leaders often leave lasting consequences for future generations.

“It is on the same line that I argue that the loans our leaders take today will hurt our children in the future.

“Many of them will mature for repayment and consequences long after we are gone,” he said.

Obi emotionally appealed to the abductors to recognize the innocence and humanity of the children in their custody.

“To those holding these children, I make a direct appeal to your conscience.

“Remember that these are innocent sons and daughters of people who have placed their hopes, dreams, and future in them.

“In every one of them, you will find reflections of your own children, your own family, and your own humanity,” he said.

According to Obi, no grievance, hardship, or perceived justification can outweigh the sanctity of a child’s life and innocence.

“Whatever path has led to this moment, there is still room for remorse, for humanity, and for a change of heart,” he stated.

The former Anambra State governor appealed to the abductors to show mercy and release the children without delay.

“I therefore appeal to your sense of mercy: release these children immediately. Let them go. Return them safely to society to reunite with their families,” he pleaded.

Obi’s appeal comes amid growing concerns over insecurity and the continued abduction of schoolchildren and other vulnerable citizens across parts of the country.
