Court orders remand of Muomiri Afuluanya in correctional centre

Ikechukwu Ezenagu, popularly known as Muomiri Afuluanya, has been remanded at the Amawbia Correctional Centre by an Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka.

The court, presided over by Justice Jude Obiora, made the order after hearing arguments on the defendant’s application for bail.

Ezenagu, who was brought to court from a hospital, had through his counsel, Mr Kingsley Awuka, applied for bail on health grounds.

The defence also urged the court to allow the defendant remain in the hospital pending the next adjourned date.

However, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Tobechukwu Nweke, opposed the application and prayed the court to remand the defendant pending the determination of the motion for bail.

In his ruling, Justice Obiora held that a hospital was not a constitutionally recognised facility for the detention of a defendant.

The judge consequently ordered that Ezenagu be remanded at the Amawbia Correctional Centre.

The matter was adjourned until June 19,  for further proceedings.
