A graduate of Mass Communication from the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Michael Obeten, has died following an accident involving a malfunctioning cannon.
The incident occurred during a rehearsal for the Good Friday Passion Play in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area in Cross River.
Obeten, popularly known as “Englishman,” was a prominent actor in the annual “Passion of Christ” drama, where he portrayed the role of Jesus Christ in 2023 and 2024.
The incident occurred at Station 12 of the rehearsal scene, which depicts the crucifixion.
A locally fabricated cannon, reportedly used to simulate thunder effects, malfunctioned and discharged metal fragments, one of which struck the victim on the head.
He was immediately taken to a hospital where he underwent emergency surgery but was later confirmed dead.
The deceased was said to be mentoring younger actors at the time of the incident.
Alumni Reacts
Reacting to the development, members of the 2007 Macosite Alumni Group of UNICROSS described the incident as tragic and avoidable.
In a statement, the group alleged that the cannon was operated by unlicensed individuals.
They called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
They also urged relevant authorities to hold those responsible accountable and ensure stricter safety measures at public events.
The group also called for a ban on the use of firearms and similar devices during religious and cultural activities.
They warned that such practices pose serious safety risks.
“This incident could have been prevented.
“The use of unregulated weapons at public gatherings endangers lives and must be addressed urgently,” the statement said.
