Rising misconduct: Zamfara bans signing-out ceremonies in schools

Zamfara Governor

The Zamfara State Government has imposed a total ban on signing-out carnivals and similar activities in all educational institutions, citing growing concerns over student misconduct.

The directive, contained in a circular dated April 6, 2026, was signed by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam.

It was also copied to Governor Dauda Lawal, security agencies, school administrators, and other key stakeholders.

According to the ministry, signing-out celebrations—typically organised by final-year students—have increasingly turned into events marked by indecent behaviour, misconduct, and activities deemed inconsistent with the moral and academic standards of the state’s education system.

To ensure compliance, schools have been directed to hold stakeholder meetings to properly communicate and enforce the ban.

Parents and guardians were also urged to warn their children against participating, as strict sanctions have been introduced for violators.

In a statement by the ministry’s Information and Public Relations Officer, Bashir Abashiya, any teacher found supporting or ignoring such activities will face disciplinary actions ranging from queries and final warnings to suspension or demotion.

Students who defy the directive risk penalties including withholding or cancellation of results, and in some cases, repeating their final year.

Security agencies, alongside school security personnel, have been tasked with ensuring strict monitoring and enforcement.

Religious and community leaders have also been called upon to reinforce moral values among young people.
