Crackdown looms as Awka South battles drug abuse

The Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra, Mr Chinedu Okafor, has announced a major crackdown on drug abuse and illegal drug activities in the area.

Okafor who spoke with newsmen on Monday, warned offenders to desist or face prosecution.

He gave the directive amid what he described as an alarming increase in the sale and consumption of hard drugs.

“The drugs are cocaine, heroin, tramadol and crystal methamphetamine, popularly known as “Mkpuru Mmiri”.

“The move is aimed at safeguarding public health, restoring order and ensuring the safety of residents.

“Our priority is to safeguard public health, restore order and ensure the safety of our residents.

” We urge every member of the communities in Awka South to reject illicit drug activities and support efforts to build a healthier and safer area,” he said.

Okafor disclosed that the council was collaborating with security agencies to commence full-scale enforcement operations across the area.

He said that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted without exception, urging residents to steer clear of all forms of illicit drug activities.

“This directive should be taken as a final warning, anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” he said..
